I'm trying to use inkscape to make a pattern for a leather wallet that has stitch marks that accurately represent the marks that my actual stitching chisel tool will mark on the leather. I did that with the top picture by measuring, adjusting, etc until everything was right. It worked but takes a long time and im looking for an easier way to do this when i make new patterns with different corner radii. I tried to use pattern along path, as you can see in the bottom example, but it distorts the shape of the stitch marks around the corners, and it also doesn't seem to let me choose the units of measurement for the distance between copies. I cant even figure what units that distance between copies is in. I read that its supposed to be pixels, but when i make a 1mm square and convert it to pixels in the drop down, it says 1mm = 3.78 px. Using this conversion makes way too much space between marks. Also, it only lets you specify the distance between objects to 1 decimal place, which is not specific enough and over several marks around the periphery of this rectangle will make an error that adds and causes the first/last stitch marks to be misaligned. Any ideas what im doing wrong, or other suggestions for how to do this? Thanks!
It's possible to do it by adding nodes to the path, then adding a custom marker to the node.
I'm not sure if symmetry or exact measurements are more important to you.
The marker has to be made from two vertical lines stacked on top of each other each measure half each of the total chisel mark. The stroke and fill of the top mark is then set to nothing.
The stroke in the original line has to be the same as the stroke of the line they are following. So perhaps this is a silly idea. :)
