I select all of the objects with a box surrounding everything. But when I choose Path -> Union one of the objects, a diagonal line, just disappears. I tried selecting everything and then choosing ungroup, but it made no difference.
A single line might not union well. I'd try Path>Stroke to path on the line before using union.
