    Summary:

Inkscape closed-crashed and deleted my saved and autosaved files on its own.

    Steps to reproduce:

    • I am working on a project on Inkscape while running google chrome at the same time.
    • I go on google chrome and I am copying something by pressing Ctrl + C
    • Then I go back to Inkscape to continue with my work.
    • Suddenly Inkscape closes on its own.
    • I open Inkscape.
    • I press Edit > Preferences > Input/Output > Autosave
    • Then I copy the Autosave directory: :\Users\44753\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\inkscape
    • "This folder is Empty"

    What happened?

So that was my first time using Inkscape. I was working on a project for days. So on my first day of working on that project, Inkscape crashed and gave me the typical choices of either "Wait for the program to respond" or " Close the program". As I said I was at the beginning of my project so I wasn't that much worried about losing it and starting all over again so I just chose "Close the program" and then looked if I can recover it. I found out that I can by running Inkscape and then go to Edit > Preferences > Input/Output > Autosave > Autosave directory: :\Users\44753\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\inkscape > Copy that > Paste it on the search bar > Open the folder > Choose the latest autosaved file . So now, knowing this method, I would every day turn on my laptop, open Inkscape, open that folder and choose the latest autosaved file to continue my work. Well, today while I'm working on Inkscape and running behind google chrome, I go for a minute on chrome and I'm copying something, I don't remember what but I hope it doesn't matter since I wasn't planning to paste it at that moment. and not on Inkscape. It was just something I needed for later. So I'm copying whatever that was by pressing Ctrl + C (I am mentioning that because I read about some bugs with Inkscape and ctrl + c but unfortunately they weren't described enough and there was no solution) and then straight away I open Inkscape to continue. Once I open Inkscape, it then closes on its own without giving me the "Wait for the program to respond" or " Close the program" choices or anything like that. So then I launch Inkscape again, do the same method to find at least the autosaved file that I opened last time and the folder :\Users\44753\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\inkscape is completely empty. So now it seems like all my work is lost.

    What should have happened?

I suppose the files should have not been deleted, and Inkscape should give me a warning when it crashed?

This seems like the wrong place to save autosaves, maybe they should go somewhere less "cachy"

That’s where inkscape saved them, how am I supposed to know it’s not safe? By the way I was also now and then saving my work by clicking on the save button on the right or by Ctrl + S so they should be somewhere, no?

I don't actually know if it's not safe or not, Linux developers make terrible windows support staff. But if windows is clearing away those files, we made a big mistake putting the files there. I know Inkscape isn't (probably isn't) deleting the files itself. So it's a question of "what is happening"

When you press the save button, it should ask you where to save the file that is irrelevant to the auto-saving feature.

Just ran into this problem myself. The first time I tried this, it was there in the folder. I was able to recover a file yesterday. Then I clicked Ctrl + S to save the file once I opened it. Funny thing is, either my memory fails me and I didn't remember to save it, or, it didn't work. Regardless of how it happened, it happened. Today though, I was thinking, "okay, no worries. I'll just go to the cache again since my autosave is on." Nope. Nothing in the file now. What was there last night is now gone today.

Anyone else have this issue? Is there a solution or somewhere else I should look?

I just lost a file I had been working on for a couple hours...I went to this same INetCache/Inkscape folder and it didn't even exist...😢

    I'm on Inkscape 1.1.2

And autosave files? These may be in a different location than the crash files.
