I am not sure what I am looking for so I am having a hard time searching for it on google or the forums. Can someone walk me through an idea and how to do it in Inkscape?
I want to take a vector image I have already created and put it in a shape and warp the vector to look like the shape.
Working idea to help illustrate what I am saying: I want to take a Mandala vector put it on a circle and warp the edges to make it look like like say a Christmas ornament. :)
(And the path that you choose onto which to apply your "pattern" - the "starter" object could be circular, elliptical, square, rectangular, a star, a valentine, a curved line, etc.)
Hi, Suzy. While my previous post is valuable for creating mandala like shapes, I just re-read your request.
You have a pre-existing mandala that you want to conform or "warp" to a different shape. That may be a bit different, and time consuming, depending on your desired end-resulting shape.
Mandalas are typically circular in shape, so skewing your original to another shape may distort the symmetry of your end-result. There are some envelope extensions and perspective extensions in Inkscape.
On the other hand, if you're end-result is to include a circular shape with an additional portion (that resembles a handle or a shape outside the circle, you could perhaps create 2 shapes - one for the mandala and the other for the portion outside the mandala circle, align them, and create a group from them, and finish out your creation.)
Thanks for the Mandala from scratch tips. However, that was just an example.
Imagine making Christmas ornaments. Where the image is on the sphere, and you see the outer edges "warp" as in the perspective changes as the image is going further back and wrapping around the ornament.
I only used Mandala as an example. Let's say I wanted to put a unicorn vector i have and place it on an ornament.
Doesn't have to be an ornament. Can be a kids bouncy ball that has paw patrol image on it. :) I am just trying to figure out if there is an easy way to accomplish this effect. I am working out some coloring book page ideas in my head and how to take my current library of vectors i have created and turn them in to this themed concept.
I just looked up an example of the look I want to accomplish. Although this has many trees on the ornament. But the way the image bends and adheres to the shape of the sphere. That's the effect I want to look for without manually creating it. :)
Also, there probably is a way to achieve your desired outcome using Gimp. (First, you would need to export your Inkscape file into a raster image, and then use Gimp.)
I will try to research to find tutorials using Gimp to get your intended result and share later what I find.
I found this thread while searching for a similar idea. First I wanted to say, thanks Ken Wilson for your awesome and extensive advice! Second, I wanted to share a website I found while searching:
This may not yield high enough quality results for some people, but I just needed something pretty basic, so it worked fine for me. Your image should be twice as wide as it is tall, so I had to take my image and center it in a space that was the correct dimensions to get it to map onto the globe how I wanted it (I had to adjust it a few times to get it just right). Once you've got that down, you can actually tinker quite a bit with lighting effects and angles/tilt (and add rings, moons, and clouds if you want!).

I have also seen the effect done with sacred geometry. As done with this Laser Tree artwork here: https://lasertrees.com/crystal-cluster-flower-of-life-orb-wall-art/ (beautiful!)
Any ideas from the gurus? <3
Hi. There are a few ways to do this. Pattern along Path is a simple way.
Watch the video below, and perhaps search for more instructions - "inkscape pattern along path".
Please know that you can take any "starter" shape/design/text and create mandala like results ... by varying the options within this extension.
Do some experimenting and you will find many surprising results from just one "starting" object. Have fun.

One more idea for creating mandala like shapes from "scratch".

So, you want a vector file (svg) to "bend" in the shape of a sphere/circlr, similar to the image you shared?
Based upon your reply, let me see what I can come up with. It will probably be hours later, as I am headed for work.
precisely :)
Have a great day at work!
Hi, again. Try looking at these two prior tutorials I shared. They should work for text converted to path or any object converted to path.
