So I have something weird going on. I made some images in Inkscape*, save them to SVG files (including plain SVG), and then I import them into another program (in this case Scribus). When I do, all sorts of random objects show up that aren't in the original file. I mean, they're ones that did exist at some point in the project, but they're now deleted and gone. I do everything I can in Inkscape to get them to show up (unhiding all objects, unlocking all object, releasing clips, etc.) but I can't find any sign of them. But when I import them into Scribus, there they are again.
Any idea how these things are hiding out in Inkscape?
Weeeeeird. Okay, so I do that and I can now see them, but I can only seem to select and delete some of them. How did they get there, and how do I remove them?
It looks like everything you need is in "Layer 1". Open the Layers and Objects dialog [shift+ctrl+l] and lock "Layer 1" by clicking the padlock icon. [shift+ctrl+a] selects everything in every layer that isn't locked. Delete!

You've tackled all the usual suspects, I think. Can you upload a sample svg for us to examine?
Sure. The attached SVG file is an example, and I'm also attaching a PNG of what's coming up in Scribus.
Found them! [View > Display Mode > Outline] then zoom out.

And thank you for your help so far!

I have no clue how they got there. Gremlins?
Finally getting them deleted. Thank you!
