I opened up my inkscape file today to work on things. A lot of the file are images that were pasted into the document, but there's also a lot of custom made objects as well. Today I opened my file and saw this pop up before any file opened.
“The preferences file C:\Users\Administrator\Application Data\inkscape\preferences.xml is not a valid XML document.”
The file then opened and half of the objects in my file are gone now. I solved the issue with the preferences file, but still half of my onjects are gone. Imported pictures are gone as well as a lot of hand drawn objects. Where could they have gone? Is my file corrupted or something? There are no hidden layers or anything and none of them show up in the objects list. I do not know if this had anything to do with the preferences file but do find it weird they both happened at the same time.
Did I need to have that box already checked for me to have something I can work with? I found the folder where everything is but not exactly sure what I'm looking for
Depending on the version of Inkscape, the box will be checked. If the box is checked, the directory shown should contain files that are automatically named and dated. I'd open the most recent few and see if the content is close enough to work with.
Ah, okay, none of them are svg files. They're all TMP, WBT, and text documents. The box was not checked first time I went into the settings. So I'm guessing it's just lost forever?

I'd look for an autosave file. https://inkscape.org/forums/questions/have-you-set-your-autosave-check-it-now/

No autosaved files, it seems. If you wish to share the corrupted file, we can see if anything else is hidden in there.
I doubt there is, but thank you anyway
