Is there any way to apply some transformations to a path like scaling etc., and then get the transformed (scaled) path back, with transformations already applied to the path data?

There is a setting in the Behavior preferences to apply transforms directly to the path coordinates. Maybe this?

Yes, if the path is placed inside a group and the transform is applied to that group element, just ungroup.
