Beyond the Basics Filling closed Path/Stroke issue

    Hi folks,

I'm excited at the possibilities Inkscape can provide in elevating the quality and complexity of the waterslide decal designs for my 3d printed widgets. I do most of my mechanical design work in a CAD program so it's easier for me to create the outline and basic details of the water slide (path/stroke) there then bring it in to Inkscape as a .dxf file where I can add color and additional styling. That worked great the first time with a very simple design but when I started creating what would be a multi-layer design i ran in to an issue. I'm new to Inkscape so forgive me if I sound like it but it appears after importing the .dxf file, Inkscape recognizes it as having a Path and a Stroke. Great, I drag a box over the Path, select "fill between Paths" and I have Fill color. Well that was how the first one went but when I performed the same operation the next one its filling some of the Paths on the wrong side (see attached). I've tried grouping, assigning them to a single layer, selecting them in sequence, fixing by checking/unchecking "fill between many" in Path effects (which doesn't seem to function as I would expect) and probably a few other things but still no solution.

Since some of my paths would fill correctly and others wouldn't I even went back into CAD and messed with accuracy settings thinking maybe there was a tangency or connection issue or something. No change

I would appreciate any advice. Hopefully just a newb mistake, I have attached the .dxf  file and the .svg after importing/saving if you could find a moment to look. FYI all will stack to create a multicolored graphic.

    Thanks

Draw a rectangle with the Select tool including all parts of one shape - change to Node tool - again draw a rectangle including all nodes - then hit icon: "Join selected end nodes" - now you can assign a fill color.

    Agree.
It's common for CAD generated vectors to have separate line vectors.

    Polygon,

Thank you. Worked like a charm. Your avatar seems appropriate, Helping people get un-stopped up lol. I was stopped up with this issue for a good 4 hours

    Tyler,

I use a more current version of the same but I also have an old version of my CAD program. I see a lot of similarities, almost as if the CAD grew from a vector graphics program
