I have been using Inkscape for about a decade. I hadn't upgraded for a while but just installed version 1.4, dated 2024-10-11.
I often need to export the same image to PNG several times in a row, with a small tweak to each instance. I export to the same folder. In the past, once I entered the path it stayed there. I just had to modify the file name and export.
Since installing this version, when I export the program randomly changes my path. Sometimes it removes a part of the path; sometimes it adds.
For example, this morning I entered this path: D:\Dropbox\#Harvest Systems\AYS icons\PNG
But the file was exported to: D:\PNG
Sometimes it adds extra stuff into the path.
In addition, previous versions of Inkscape would give me an error if the path didn't exist. Now it just creates new folders using the randomly changed path. So I am wasting a lot of time tracking down where my files went.
Is there a fix for this that I can implement? Or is it a bug? I don't see it addressed in the upcoming release notes.
I doubt it. It always worked fine in previous versions of Inkscape. The problem arose when I upgraded from 1.2 to 1.4. And there are posts from others who are also experiencing this problem. If the # character is now a problem, it would be good to know that.
I have gone back to Inkscape 1.2. The changing path and the new sub-layers that keep expanding on their own made version 1.4 unusable for me.

On some systems and in some programming languages
#
is an illegal character.Or a character that has a specific function.
In python # is used to comment out a line.
Could that be the cause ?
