Beyond the Basics Evenly Distribute Nodes Along a Path Without Changing the Path

I want to make path for a cribbage board, which has 121 holes for the game board.

My idea is to create a path and somehow add 121 nodes that are evenly distributed. I will use the "object to marker" to then convert the nodes to actual holes.

What is the best way to accomplish this? There does not seem to be anything under the align & distribute menu or path extensions that could accomplish evenly spreading out a specific number of nodes along a path without changing the shape or length.

    Much thanks!

Hi. Look at these 2 links.

I would tackle this with two paths effects [Clone Original] and [Pattern Along Path], followed by [Path > Object to Path] and [Path > Cut Path].

The linked pattern is repeated at equidistant intervals along the skeleton path. The nodes of the pattern can be edited on the canvas, as can the nodes of the skeleton path.

Thanks @ken10001000 and @Paddy_CAD. I appreciate the ideas and will test them out shortly.

What an excellent exercise in path operations and effects!  My attempt at solving the cribbage board 'even spacing' problem is attached.

Ken Wilson, thanks for the links showing that this problem has been solved several ways as Inkscape evolved over a decade.

The thread since 2012 shows some of the limitations that Path Effects/Extensions had for 'even spacing' on different shaped paths.

Paddy_CAD , thank you for your solution using the best past ideas and overcoming the limitations.  Your solution seems fairly general purpose for the 'even spaced nodes on path' question.

This exercise points out that the solution depends on what 'even spacing' means, the shape of the path or paths, and keeping track of which direction each path has.
