I had a lot of custom templates saved and later deleted some from %appdata%\inkscape\templates to clean up. Unfortunately they still appear in the list of templates when I use File > New from template
I can not for the life of me figure out where this list is stored. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing. I've looked at all settings files I can find. I've search trough the registry. I'm lost.
Stock templates that ship with Inkscape Start Inkscape, go to Preferences -> System. The path to the \share folder is listed there. The \share\inkscape\templates folder is documented (README file).
Why can't the developers put a menu item up that will link a user to the custom templates folder? Every time I want to "clean up" the template list, I spend a half a day trying to find where the devil the list is.
The only connection that has worked in the past is: users/user/Library/Application support/org.inkscape.Inkscape/config/inkscape/templates/ Now that link is no longer working.
I am extremely frustrated by what to me is a seemingly simple issue. I would love an explanation why they make this so difficult ???
AHA .... I found the answer to my issue. YOU HAVE TO SEARCH WITHIN INKSCAPE .... as follows:
OPEN INKSCAPE > File Open > Users > User > Library > Application support > Org.inkscape.Inkscape > Config > Inkscape > Templates/
Unfortunately, you cannot DELETE from this folder !
I went back to Finder, and tried again by going to users/user/library/application support/log For whatever reason a "log" folder appears and Finder will go no further in the string.
I then used the "hidden files" option as follows: In Finder, hold down the "Option" key and press GO on the menu bar ... then slide down and select "library" from the menu. This will present you with the opportunity to complete the rest of the string by selecting ... Application support > org.inkscape.inkscape > Config > Inkscape >Ttemplates. You can now delete whatever files you wish to delete.
I am using a MacBook. I assume that perhaps you are using Windows. When I try your suggestion, there is no "Preferences" option in the edit menu. [See the attached screenshot.]

I guess you need to investigate the Inkscape.app itself: Contents->Resources->Share->Inkscape->templates
No idea about any side-effects by simply deleting from this list.
User templates on macOS are at: Library/Application support/org.inkscape.Inkscape/config/inkscape/templates/
Windows users
User templates

In most versions, the user template directory is easily accessed by Menu: Edit>Preferences>System, click the Open button by User Templates.
