I am 80 years old and completely new to Inkscape.
I downloaded Inkscape yesterday,tried to open a file and got a big red x across the work area.I tried many,many times yesterday and today but still have the same problem.
I will try to post photos of my problem.

Can someone please help me solve this problem?

I'd try menu: View>Display Mode> Normal.

Chime back and let us know the result.

The display may be set to show only vector geometry (Outlines).

It is a setting frequently to inspect the vectors without color. Images are shown as red rectangles.
