Beyond the Basics Flow root needed in object tree?

I guess flow root is some sort of container for text?

I was cleaning up the object tree in a project and found the flowroot entry.  Is it needed?  What does it do?

I deleted it with no apparent effect.  Should I have left it in?

I guess some programs can't import flow root text so it may even be detrimental for sharing files.

Will simply deleting it change any flow root text to regular text?

Flowroot appears if you dragged a rectangle with the Text tool, rather than just clicking and typing. It creates a structure which is not compatible with anything except Inkscape, so should be avoided.

You can remove it by using the Text > Convert to Text menu entry. Just trying to delete it from the Object dialog is likely to lead to trouble.

(Note that the forthcoming v1.0 of Inkscape implements flowed text in an SVG2 compatible way, so the prohibition against dragging with the Text tool may go away in future)
