Ive recently been having this issue when saving a design. It also saves the background color, but I only want the artwork to save. NOT the background color.
I have the document properties canvas set to a navy blue color .
Any ideas how I can resolve this? I must have changed something because it never use to do this.

Can you see the very bottom slider in the image, and the text in the tooltip ?
I think that should solve your problem.
Make sure the alpha is set to zero.
Also in the png export pane there is an advanced area, to export with transparency it has to be RGBA not just RGB.
