I installed the various packages for LaTeX, and when I select render, I get the LaTeX option, but when I select it, I get no box to enter the equation.

I'm using windows and I have installed inkscape 1.2. I thought about restarting but that didn't work either.

    Am I doing something wrong?

No, but you're not doing enough.

Inkscape can't generate TeX files natively. However, there are some third party extensions out there to help you. I found these two, but I haven't used either of them. Beware that many extensions only work with a compatible Inkscape version.

I have installed everything in the instructions. I use LateX on a daily basis. So I have installed textext, and ghostscript, and ghostview.

[Extensions > Text > Tex Text] should open a LaTeX formula dialog. What happens on your system?

To get a LaTeX comment, I need to go to Extensions > Render > LaTeX formula, and I don't get anything.

Sorry I can't help you. I suggest going back to the developer's documentation. There are links for troubleshooting and bug reporting.
