Beyond the Basics Unwanted grayness in filtered gradient

Hi! First of all, the unwanted grayness is not *in* the gradient, strictly speaking, but I think it is related to my use of a gradient.

So, I'm doing a map art graphic, and I thought it would be cool to create a kind of "disintegrating edge" effect. There doesn't appear to be a filter that does quite what I want, but I figured out the following procedure:

    1) Create a rectangle with a linear gradient fill. The gradient has four stops: white, 0% opaque at the top and bottom edges; and white, 100% opaque at two intermediate points.

    2) Apply the Noise fill filter, with a noise color of black and a couple of tweaks, to the rectangle. The first attached image, mask.png, shows the result.

    3) Use the rectangle as a mask for the main layers of the graphic.

The result is more or less what I want, but there is a lot of gray in the middle range of the altered area. The second attached photo shows how this looks in the exported image, by itself and on a white background, and the third shows a test print.

What I would like is to have the image disintegrate into progressively smaller and sparser particles near the edge, with no color shift. The space between the particles should be fully transparent. But there's a lot of gray, and it's quite ugly IMHO.

Any ideas about how to fix this?

Here's something from my archive that might help.

Hmm, yeah, that's pretty close to what I'm trying to do. I'll see what I can do with that. Thanks!
