I know I can draw a rectangle, select it, then go up to the bar and modify the height and width.
Is it possible to directly type the dimensions when drawing the object?
And: Is it possible to change the stroke width, and keep the outside dimensions of the object? Or to draw another object next to an existing object, but snap to the outside dimensions rather than the nodes?
(Example: draw 10cm x 20 cm rectangle with 1 cm borders. Then draw another 10cm x 20cm x 1cm next to it, edge to edge).
Question 1: D'oh! You can't set dimensions from the keyboard using the drawing tools. Only the Select tool allows this. Rectangle, Ellipse and Select tools allow you to set dimensions from the keyboard, but you must click into the toolbar. It would be useful to access this with a keyboard shortcut. (Edited after Polygon's post.)
Question 2: Nodes don't move when you change the stroke width. The new stroke will always fall inside or outside the original stroke.
Question 3: Go to Inkscape Preferences [shift+ctrl+p], then [Tools], then [Visual bounding box]. Turn on [Snap to bounding box edges] and [Snap to bounding box corners].
1. of all go Preferences->Tools= enable "Visual Bounding box"
2. draw a rectangle adjust stroke width - double-click rectangle tool in toolbar to get to its properties= Hit "Take from Selection" delete rectangle from page
3. draw new rectangle and triple-click into W:(idth) - type in 10 - tap to go and highlight H:(eight) type in 20 - hit esc - hit cmd+D to duplicate - hit S - drag new rectangle and let it snap "Bounding box corner to bounding box corner". Done so far.
Was looking for a way to avoid the manually triple-click to enable the entry field - but no luck so far
Dear Inkscape Community;
I know I can draw a rectangle,
select it, then go up to the bar and modify the height and width.

Assuming your template is already set up for cm:
1. of all go Preferences->Tools= enable "Visual Bounding box"
2. draw a rectangle adjust stroke width - double-click rectangle tool in toolbar to get to its properties= Hit "Take from Selection" delete rectangle from page
3. draw new rectangle and triple-click into W:(idth) - type in 10 - tap to go and highlight H:(eight) type in 20 - hit esc - hit cmd+D to duplicate - hit S - drag new rectangle and let it snap "Bounding box corner to bounding box corner". Done so far.

I can't find the toolbar for entering dimensions in version 1.2. There is no "visual bounding box" option.
To show the toolbar for entering dimensions, Menu > View > Show/Hide > Tool Controls Bar.
