I followed your YouTube tutorial for instructions on 'how to convert images into dots' which as a dot artist, this tool would be a great help. Unfortunately I am encountering a problem as I am only getting the black circles. I am using Windows 10 and I think the problem is that when I get to the section 'Trace' I am unable to click on the Colour box in the Presence section. I have spent the last 2 hours re-doing the tutorial but get the same results. What am I doing wrong?
A link to the video would be helpful. (It's not my tutorial.)
Tiled clones with colour tracing works on my system (macos 15, Inkscape 1.4.2). Perhaps you can attach an svg file showing the problem. I suggest using a few clones for a modest file size.
David - LOL - I most likely looked at the same (or similar) video months ago and threw up my hands. I should have known that I should have used unset fill. Geez
I have now uninstalled and re installed to see if that made ay difference but no. Below is a step by step of my actions. Perhaps you may be able to see where I am going wrong. I do appreciate all you help.
This is the sequence from Fill and Stroke
Click on ?
Paint is undefined
Drag dot onto left corner
Click on dot to align and distribute
Align and Distribute
Circle is now in left hand corner, I have checked – relative to page √
Next line - Second symbol to left (left aligned) √
Next line - Second symbol to left (Top edges aligned) √
Select circle, Edit, clone and create tiled clones.
Popup – Create Tiled Clones
P1 simple translation
Apply to tiled clones -
Width and Height entered same as previous image size shown
Use saved size and position of the tile √
Create. Image shown covered with black dots
I am sorry I do no know how to send a svg file (being over 80 yrs old I am not very technically minded)
This is my whole problem, for some reason I cannot alter these sections. I cannot alter 'value of the clones' item 3. as nothing happens when I click on it. It is stuck on Presence.
After spending hours trying to work out what I was doing wrong, on the last tab - Trace. Nick Saverino did not mention that you have click the first box: Trace the drawing under the clones/sprayed items. Once I had ticked this box I was able to set the other boxes to colour. I got there in the end but it took a long time. Many thanks again for all who tried to help me figure this out.

Has the original circle an unset fill ?
1.5 developpement version has a chameleon fill option in fill and stroke panel that would turn black dots into the colour of underlying objects.

Eileen - Click the paperclip at the bottom left of the message. You can attach SVG files.
Do you have link to the video you watched?
I'd ensure that the Trace and Color selections are active in the Clones dialog.
