I'm sure this has been asked a million times before, but if someone could help me fill an object with a color, I would be grateful. I attach a screen shot showing my latest failed attempt.
The tiny icon top right of canvas tells you your are in outline and color managed display mode (notice that top window bar of inkscape also displays you are in outline mode).
Click on it (or press ctrl + 5 to cycle or do view > display mode) to return to normal display mode.
