Hello, from a technical supplier I got a file to work on with Inkscape. This file contains a font I don't have installed. (and I can't install it!) What font is displayed? Is it sensible/feasible to change positions of text elements, not touching the text itself, then store and submit the changed file? This is on 1.02 on macos 10.14 and 0.92 on Linux Mint.
On the menu bar, click Text, then 'Text and Font...'
There should be a font highlighted there. That is the default font. You can change this if you want. Scroll the list of fonts to find the one you want, and set your preferred size, then click the 'Set as default' button.
Hope that works for you (I know sometimes things are different on Macs, and I can't test it).

Michael. The text should be displayed correctly when opened by the originator who has the font installed. I tested this by:
Creating some text with a specific font and saving the drawing.
Remove that font from my system
Restart Inkscape and see Font is not available
Open saved drawing
See Text is different and is defined by the default font. 😲
Move the text and edit the words, and save the drawing.
Re-install the font.
Restart Inkscape and see the font is available again
Open the drawing and see the text is now shown correctly in the restored font. 👍
Thank you very much to all your very quick replies! Much appreciated!
I had a look at all your answers and see I should tackle the problem at the supplier's side! The move-only part is supposed to be easy but the fonts differ in size. Copying the file to the linux computer shows exactly the same effects, so far.
I also changed the default font to something very obvious but fonts shown in the provided .svg didn't change. In the attached screenshot I changed the 6-Key to what is here the installed font with the same name. So it seems I could edit the text anyway?
I'm hitting the learning curve hard, but I'll talk to the originator first. The font they demand is different from the font they used in their original data. Which is ... confusing, to say the least. Thanks a lot again, Michael.
Thanks for replying! Yes, that's the font and I did install that some time ago. But I'm sorry, I think I missed a point: The second attached screenshot shows the font which comes with the graphics file: Rajdhani-Bold, Normal
As I said, I did install above fonts, as also linked to by the supplier of this file. But this is apparently different from what I got with the graphics file. I think I need to clarify that with the people who sent the files.
Just a quick follow-up: The vendor sent me a new file which has all lettering converted to paths, along with the information what's the actual font being used.
This way I could rework the layout eventually. Problem solved!

If the text is only being moved, it can be converted to paths and moved. It cannot be edited by typing, however.
If the font is available, it should be a simple matter to install it.

It seems Rajdhani is an open source font, so it should be easy to download the variants from Google and apply the correct weight where needed.
