In general I am huge supporter of open source and freeware - so thumbs up for that.
But I have to stress that the 'Tracing' option lacks a lot of developer attention.
1) Yes, there is a lot of good knowledge on how to trace online.
2) But this seems quite useless, when even a 480x270 b/w image is met by a "Image looks too big ... "-warning.
3) When trying to trace it anyway Inkscape crashes.
4) I am using a Win 10 laptop, that (I admit) also uses some of the non-GPU ram to handle graphics. But that should not be an issue for most image-sizes at tracing-procedures?
// hope something will be done ... at least so the user can have more options at trace-function (maybe a "select GPU/ram for bitmap handling" interface at 'Settings')
ok - lets see if any others with my problem over time (at least I have brought it to the table ) ... will try and test the issue over the different platform setups I come across from here on forward {I have both Mac and Ubuntu-machines to test on myself (by exact same bitmap-file)}
I use Inkscape on Ubuntu, and have traced countless images as the basis for my 'Monsters, Inked' comic strip. Typically a character would be around 1000x2500 pixels, with backgrounds getting much larger than that. I've never seen the error message the OP reports.
It would be good to get a copy of the "480x270 b/w image" to see if there's something odd about it. It would also be useful for the OP to try with a different image: I've attached one of my smaller character images (526x1309 pixels), which I've just successfully traced using the default parameters using both 0.92 and 1.0 versions of Inkscape.

Ok - macOS user here - but I can´t remember having issues you´re describing in the last 15 years with Inkscape.

You are welcome to share the image or a portion of it here for us to test.
