Beginners' Questions Filters not working
  1. #1

    Hello,

None of the filters (from the "Filters" menu) is doing anything, really nothing at all.

I just created for different images (four files) using an Inkscape version from 2018 (I deleted it now, so don't know exactly which version it was, but it was 0.9xxx...). The images are solely comprised of shapes build in Inkscape (no imported images).

Everything was working fine, except that none of the filters are doing anything. With "Live preview" enabled in the filter dialog, moving the sliders has absolutely no effect at all on the (perceived) image. Clicking on "Apply": still no effect. The same for the filters that do not provide a dialog. When clicking on the filter, nothing happens to the image.

I uninstalled Inkscape and installed the newest version (1.02-2). Still the same problem. Uninstalled again, removed the whole Inkscape directory from Program Files. Installed newest version again. Still same problem.

Nowhere on the internet I can find someone describing the same problem. Hopefully someone here can help.

    My system:

    - Windows 10 Home, version 10.0.19042 (automatically updated this week)

    - Dell XPS 15

    - Inkscape: current version 1.02-2, installed using the downloade .exe file

Are you sure that View/Display Mode has not been accidentally set on No Filters option?

    Thanks for your suggestion Marco.

The Display Mode is set to Normal, unfortunately.

What filter(s) are you actually trying?

So, it turns out that I misunderstood the filter tool. Apparently, the filters only work on a subject, and not on the image as a whole

I need a tool to quickly put a sort of greyscale mask over the whole image, or preferably even (partly) desaturate it, ideally with the option to tweak the greyscale (desaturated) lightness per colour. This in order to make 'greyed-out' versions of my designed icons. Such a mask/filter should also easily be switched off and on again, in case I make further adjustments to my icon.
Selecting all subjects, and then adding a filter would then be the solution here.

Anyway, thought that these filters in the "Filters" menu would do just that, and was not aware that I made an assumption there, which is why until now, it did not cross my mind to check if the filters do work on separate objects. A clear head in the morning brought this epiphany.

    Thanks anyway, for helping!

Haha, yes, this is it. FYI there is also the Extension "Desaturate" (Extensions/Color/Desaturate) that works on all the objects, selected or not. This prevent to use filters, often too goofy.

Thank you so much for the tip!
It helped me find the Extension "Custom" (Extensions/Color/Custom), which provides exactly the functionality I was looking for.

It's worth noting that filters can be applied to groups of objects, so if you're able to group all the parts of your image together then you can use a filter.

It is also possible to make a filter work over the whole image, but it requires some low-level understanding of how filters work in SVG, and a bit of manipulation of the XML content. For most situations it's not worth the effort, if grouping does the job.
