working with multiple paths
Inkscape keeps on creating unwanted groups. Ungrouping does not help. and groups are auto created again when trying to select a path.

I'd open the Objects dialog (Menu: Object>Objects) and un-group the first group under the Layer (layers are special groups).
Feel free to post a screenshot of your Objects dialog for more info.
Same here; whenever I set a clip or mask and make "undo" I´m receiving a grouped image. 🤔
