    Hello there,

I have found interesting retro and vintage palettes here:

    https://www.shutterstock.com/blog/25-free-retro-color-palettes

But they are in (.ase) format and I want to import all of them into Inkscape, How to achieve this?

    -----------

Operating system: Windows 10 Education 1909 (OS Build 18363. 1139)

    Inkscape version: 1.0.1

    Thank you for your time

Inkscape can use GIMP palettes (.gpl).

There seem to be ways to convert ase to gpl, but I haven't got them to work yet :(

    • Importing ase to GIMP and saving as gpl
    • Converting using Swatchbooker

    Please explore those options.

I'll keep trying to make something work, but hopefully a more knowledgeable forum member can chime in .

Thank you for your reply, Here is my report:

Option 1: Import .ase into gimp and gimp will convert it to .gpl automatically so that I can copy those .gpl files to inkscpae palette folder:

I already tried this option, but here is the error I get when importing:

"Unknown type of palette file -- The selected source contains no colors"

                         https://i.imgur.com/Sp8Sgvm.png

I searched for that error, but I didn't find something helping me

Option 2: Import .ase file into gimp using ASE2GIMP:

I tried it, but an error came to me:

"Unable to run GimpPdbProgress callback. The corresponding plug-in may have crashed."

                         https://i.imgur.com/PkPgroJ.png

I searched for that error, but I didn't find something helping me

    Option 3: using Swatchbooker:

This is very old, not easy to install because of pre-requests. I don't know if it works anymore or not, But:

    • Swatchbooker: Downloaded
    • Python 2.5: Downloaded and installed using link in Swatchbooker hompage
    • PyQt4 (PyQt-Py2.5-gpl-4.7.7-1.exe): The link is broken in Swatchbooker homepage and Can't find this version of PyQt4 at https://riverbankcomputing.com/software/pyqt/download , So I downloaded this version PyQt4_gpl_win-4.12.3.zip in the end of page, and extracted it but I don't know what to do next and how to install. I opened CMD and run this command "pip install PyQt5" and installation was successful. I tired to run "pip install PyQt4" but this what I got:
      • ERROR: Could not find a version that satisfies the requirement PyQt4
      • ERROR: No matching distribution found for PyQt4
    • PIL (PIL-1.1.7.win32-py2.5.exe): The link is broken in Swatchbooker homepage and Can't find this version, So I used "pip install Pillow" command in my CMD to install the latest version (8.0.1) according to https://pypi.org/project/Pillow/ and this Requirement already satisfied: Pillow in "c:\users\adminstrator\appdata\local\programs\python\python36-32\lib\site-packages (5.3.0)"
    • LittleCMS (lcms-1.18a.win.bin.zip): The link is broken in Swatchbooker homepage. I downloaded it from here https://sourceforge.net/projects/lcms/files/lcms/1.18/lcms-1.18a.tar.gz/download but I can't find "lcms.dll" and "_lcms.pyd" as instructions in Swatchbooker homepage.

The result: Swatchbooker can't run, just a loading symbol shows up for less than second and nothing happens.

Option 4: Using gpick - an advanced color picker:

I have latest version from https://github.com/thezbyg/gpick/releases/tag/gpick-0.2.6rc1 but I don't know what to do, how to install.

    Final thoughts until now:

If I have .ase files, I go to https://carl.camera/sandbox/aseconvert/ (ASE Color Decoder), upload my .ase file to get the hex colors of this palette, then use Generate Palette Extension https://inkscape.org/~olibia/%E2%98%85generate-palette-extension  by creating rectangle or circles inside inkscape and color each one with a hex value then save it as a palette with the extension.

I hope we see something in the future in Inkscape to import Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator with an easy way. I saw a bug or feature request here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/171830

SOLVED: @Aero Thank you for your suggestion, I downloaded sK1-2.0 and opened it then went to Edit menu >> Preferences, then I chose "palettes" then "palette management" tab and Imported an (.ase) color swatch. After that I renamed it and "Export" it as ".GPL" from little dropdown menu "Save as type". Next I moved the ".GPL" file to my Inkscape palettes folder "C:\Users\AdminStrator\AppData\Roaming\inkscape\palettes" and I can use my palette in Inkscape.

Final word: There are stuff are more important to take care of and be added into next version of Inkscape. But I hope to see this option in Inkscape in the future with a bulk importing option.

Thank you @TylerDurden for your support. THANKS TO YOU ALL FROM MY HEART. Good Luck.
