Tried to make a grain effect following a tutorial on YT  but when the filter with turbulence is applied the result is a grey rectangle and not a grain of the selected object. I must be missing a selection somewhere in the process. Using inkscape on linux mint 21.3. Uploaded 3 screen shots. 1. Object to add the filter. 2. the filter results. 3. the actual results i was looking for from the YT video.

Any thoughts of where I have stepped beside the path

You need to change the first connector of the displacement map. Drag the top one of the filter primitive's connector and plug it into "source graphic" on the side.

So that it looks as in the first screenshot.

The current setup displaces a turbulent noise which fills the filtered area entirely.

Wow. I had to read this a few time before the penny dropped. Bingo. Thank You! Screenshot of the change and result for others to see.

It seems the filter is still cropped; You can click on the cog-wheel and disable "Automatic Region" to adjust the dimensions manually.
