At the side of each post is a very limited set of our emoji which can be used to mark your reaction to a post.
So far, these haven't been used too much and I think part of it is that I randomly picked a bunch of them that looked nice without thinking how users would want to actually use them.

Why limit the subset instead of allowing to react with any emoji like Rocket.Chat / GitHub / GitLab and many others services are doing it?
The current position makes the function a bit hard to spot. Also it's unclear the added emojis are actual reactions. I hovered some of them already to get a tooltip that explains to me what the meaning of the icon was (until I learned those where reactions) - I think the edit symbol goes there as well? Yes it does.
It's reactions - they're seldomly useful. In chat we mostly "overuse" them in a social and informal way (but without adding information like in GitLab where we can use them to vote, etc.). Forums are a bit more formal, yet less formal than GitHub (i.e. "voting" and opinions can go into "me too" posts) so reduced usage might be natural.
When I post, I don't want someone just clicking a button to react. I want people to react by discussing the topic. This is a forum for discussion as far as I can tell. I am not looking for "likes" or happy faces when I come here, I am looking for an actual discussion. So, imo, it can be removed without losing anything.
I mostly would like to see a 'like' or maybe 'agree', type emoji button or thumbs up. Additionally, there are times when someone asks a question and no one answers - not because we don't want to, but because we (ok, I) don't know the answer or not 100% sure we can help. So sometimes, I'd just like to click on a button to let the OP (orig poster) know that the post has been reviewed, (ie, they haven't been forgotten), we just don't have a good answer yet... Not sure exactly what it would look like (maybe the one with a smiley whose arms go up into the 'I don't know' shrug). I don't leave a lot of emojiis anywhere, just here and there, so for me it's not vital (then again I'm old as the dinosuars!).
Question. just tried to open Dr. Mo's link above - took me to a list of over 2000 items of pngs - none of which show a preview. Is that right? No way I can open up that many files. Is there a better way to view them?
@doctormo Not sure where to put it. If it helps: I'd expect it under the post and on the right. Problem with that is that our post design doesn't have a clear bottom line.
(Random observation: it's also wasting a lot of space.)
The forum loads slowly as it is, so adding more fluff like emojis and "likes" is adding more load time. There are times where I can sit back from my keyboard waiting for a post to load. The more added, the slower it will get. So, please, don't add anything more to posts. Why not work on something like markdown for posting to the forums for those who can't get the WYSIWYG to behave at times? I know that people liked or disliked what I posted when they take the time to reply. Also, I can wait for answers to questions. Decades online have taught me to be patient.
Are there any specific pages that are slow? So far I've found the forum to be VERY fast (compared to the rest of the inkscape website). But maybe there's certain pages that are slower.
Emoji nowadays are typically UTF-8 characters (so only a few bytes in size) and rendered via a font that is either already available on hte users system or downloaded once as a webfont. @doctormo Can probably explain if this applies to the forum as well.
@Ede_123 The fallback is the installed font, but it will attempt to download png replacements EmojiOne versions if given the chance. this is why they sometimes look different between the text editing box and the rendered messages. The text box is using the font.

I think the main reason is because the button is near invisible. I'd use it more if it were on the right, below the post, where I expect it.

The whole forum is slow to load and slow to scroll up and down pages.
I'm not seeing any significant speed/loading issues, but I spend most my time here via Windows on a gaming machine.
