Every time I use the freehand drawing pencil it imports an image when I release the mouse.  Don't understand this one.

It looks as if the shape of the pencil tool is set to from clipboard.
To change the settings of your pencil go to the Tool controls bar > Shape. There you choose None to draw without an image.
