I am trying to wrap the attached file along a path using pattern along path. I have copied it to the clipboard but when I apply i get a lot of weird lines. Any idea what I am doing wrong?
Select all the paths in group g5028, combine (ctrl + k).
Ungroup the group g5028.
Your svg file consists now in just one path. Copy it.
Draw the path you want to use for LPE, apply LPE pattern along path, click on right icon "Link to path in clipboard" (that's why you could delete the clone).
What David said (convert your object from a Group of more than one object, into a single object) + Increase the number of nodes in your pattern to get a more reliable "bending" transformation.
You can increase the number of nodes with the Node tool (N), select the object when that tool is active, Select all nodes (Ctrl + A), and use the "Insert new nodes" button from the toolbar (or the Insert key on your keyboard). This will add one new node in between existing ones.
Another way of inserting more nodes is to use the "Add nodes…" extension (Extensions > Modify Path > Add Nodes…). You'll probably want to use the "By max. segment length".
Once your object has more nodes along the path it will behave more reliably when distorted with an LPE. After you've got the shape you like you can duplicate it (if you need to keep the original LPE) and convert it to a path (it will no longer be editable as an LPE), then Simplify the path (Ctrl + L) to remove unnecessary nodes and reduce your drawing complexity and file size.

The Path-Effect "Bend" will work with Groups:
