@Polygon `meta` is the catch-all term for the key on different operating systems. On mac, the key is called "command", on windows it is the key with the windows symbol.
@Polygon cmd instead of ctrl because cmd is the standard modifier key in virtual all mac programs. Copy, paste, safe, ... all use cmd. It is really unnatural to have to use the ctrl key for zooming, if there is nothing else which uses this key and your fingers are already on the cmd key.
Sorry - but cmd/⌘ never has been a modifier key - it´s the command-key.
shift/ctrl/alt are modifier keys.
At least "meta"+scrollwheel should work if it has not been taken by any other function. What works here is this set up this but either Vertical or Horizontal pan will not work - but leaving zoom "blank" let´s you zoom in/out. Alternatively you can scroll upon the Z:% entry field in the right bottom of the Inkscape window.
And you have to make sure it don´t collide with macOS System-Prefs->Keyboard + Accessibility aids.
I am on mac os 11.6 and inkscape 1.1.
I would like to use `cmd+mousewheel` to zoom in or out. To do this I configured my keyboard modifiers as shown as in the attached image.

Unfortunately if I try to press `cmd` and zoom, it won't work. Instead the canvas will pan up or down, but not zoom in.
If I configure another modifier key, e.g. `alt`, the zoom works fine, but not if I choose `cmd`.
What is a "meta" modifier? For me it's ctrl+mouse-wheel for zooming on macOS-BigSur. Will test cmd+MW later.

Never came across it. As I said I will test it later; right now just on iPad.
Oh and why cmd and not ctrl?
