I have Windows 7 and 10, using Inkscape .91. I would like to duplicate the effect that is shown in the image below/attached. I am havng trouble because I am not sure what I should be searching for, because I am not sure what the effect is called., It looks like it is "embissed" or "3d". Any assistance in directing me to reference material or tutorial is greatly appreciated. Thank you. Sgarciav
hi sgarciav. I would suggest looking at logos by nick tutorials, I'd start with him on youtube, though he also has a website. I'd start by searching for metal (there's no metal color so this has to be faked with gradients), as well as embossed metallic text (that border is metal). You'll be putting together a couple of techniques.
I haven't watched these all the way through, but should be at least a starting point. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. Someone else may come along that has a better tut that has all the techniques you need in one, but here's a start anyway:
Yes, embossing, 3D, bevel, these are the names for that effect.
You can use filters to get a similar effect. Menu > filters > bevels > ridged border Menu > filters > shadows and glows > drop shadow...
I tried something with 2 filters.
1 Make a rectangle with only a grey stroke. Use text with a grey fill. 2 Select both and group (Ctrl+G) 3 Add the filter ridged border.
4 Duplicate the group (Ctrl+D) and delete that filter through menu > filters > remove filters. 5 This group gets another filter. Use drop shadow.... Here you have to tweak the settings. On the tab Options: Blur radius 1,0 Horizontal offset 0,5 (px) Vertical offset 1,6 (px) Shadow type: inner cutout.
Use on the tab blur colour you use a white. Then you click apply and you get a nice white highlight.
6 You can put that highlight over your other filtered group.
First off, thank you all for your assistance. I much appreciate it! π
Flamingo Lady: I have to learn how to read. At first I thought I had read "Flaming Lady" Oops! Thank you for your suggestion. I had seen the video that you referenced. My thoughts were the same as the first comment that was left. It is chock full of information and I need to have a much closer look at it. I’ll be sure to watch more of his videos.
Tyler Durden: Thanks for the suggestion, I am open to using whatever software works for me. I've heard great things about GIMP and have been meaning to learn and use it for uh... more than a decade now, but Other Things always come up and I keep postponing it. My only reason for using Inkscape is because this is the tool that I have and know currently. (And to say "know" is relative because I haven't begun to master it.)
Kirstie: Thank you for the express tutorial! The results are more than satisfactory for what I am looking for.
All: Again, thank you for taking the time to offer recommendations and instructions on how to create the image that I needed.
PS there's a bunch of the you tube vids that dont have talking, various creators. I've watched some in languages i dont know, and just watched what they do. No matter who or how done, i always pause and replay several times over. Hope you find something that works for whatever your reading need is.
Ps several people see flaming lady, lol. Flamingo lady and variations were already taken on the site i started from, so now just use it for consistency/branding...
FlamingoLady: Thanks for the recommendations. Actually, I like to hear a voice in the video. When I see mute one, I feel as though the video maker is showing the viewer how s/he did it, but hearing instructtons and remarks makes me feel as though the video author is showing the viewer how to do it.

This first one is by logos by nick. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQ57XGQ8ulA
The first 40 seconds are out of focus, but it goes back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwDO1REx1zU
Is there a compelling reason to use a vector editor like Inkscape? This is trivial for GIMP, a raster editor.
