Beginners' Questions Text to object

I'm trying to take text and convert them to vector shapes.

I do it all the time on Windows, but for some reason the current version isn't allowing it on a Mac.

I create my text, go to Path > Object to Path, and I normally get objects that I then ungroup and edit accordingly, but on a Mac with

version 1.3.2 it tells me that instead of x number of objects selected in said group, it describes them as paths with x number of nodes.

It's not letting me ungroup the text. All it does is allow me to edit and manipulate nodes.

Any help at all would be a huge help. Thanks!

Use Path->Union instead. Plus Path->Split Path if you need single glyphs.

    Hi Polygon.

OK, Path > Union didn't look like it did anything, so I then went to Path > Split Path and all glyphs separated as it would've with ungrouping after Path > Object to Path.

The bad news is that any glyphs that have loops had to have them cut out accordingly with Path > Difference, but it otherwise worked. Thanks!

That's not normal. Can you give a hint on the used font perhaps? It shall go from text object to shape with Path->Union in one go and with Path->Split Path if separate Glyphs are wanted in the next step (Inkscape 1.4).

Text > Text to Glyphs  then Path > Object to Path seems to work the best with 1.3+ for some reason. Even then you will sometimes get a burp. Reversing the path sometimes helps.

@CelticOneDesign This won´t work if you have ligatures and need one continuous path for machinery. Path->Union on Text objects has worked for years.

"The bad news is that any glyphs that have loops had to have them cut out accordingly with Path > Difference,"

[Text > Text to Glyphs  then Path > Object to Path ] usually corrects this on some fonts.

I see these messages nonstop on Reddit and Facebook groups since v1.3.

Something radically changed in 1.3 when it comes to converting Text to Paths .

Can you union after [Text > Text to Glyphs  then Path > Object to Path ]?

Absolutely. But why when Path->Union is just one step?

    Poly -

[Text > Text to Glyphs  then Path > Object to Path ] usually corrects errors on some fonts. I came across this solution from one of the developers in a post at either Reddit or a Facebook group six months(?) ago.

Edit - even this method sometimes will cause an issue. Sometimes selecting the path and reversing it solves it.

    Hi Polygon,

    Sure, to answer your question:
"That's not normal. Can you give a hint on the used font perhaps? It shall go from text object to shape with Path->Union in one go and with Path->Split Path if separate Glyphs are wanted in the next step (Inkscape 1.4)."

The font is Chunk Five Ex, downloaded from Dafont. It's a ttf, but I've had this same issue with other fonts on my iMac with v1.3.4 since installing it. I have yet to have any issues with Inkscape on the Windows machines at my local makerspace.

CelticOneDesign - Thanks for the tip, and I'll also try that and whatever puts the least amount of hurt on my workflow is the one I'm going with.

By the way, I'm doing a series of instructional videos on the tools in Inkscape for the makerspace I belong to, but I'd like to also offer them up if there's a way to do so.

    Thanks again!

    Works flawlessly on my M1Mac:

A101 - Yes that is my normal workflow now with text for Fusion 360 since v1.3.

    [Text > Text to Glyphs]

[Path > Object to Path ]

Inspect - if issue select the path - reverse path

In your use - after doing this - Union.

The issue seems related to [Stroke to Path] in v1.3.  Bizzare results sometimes. Just reverse the path then do a [Stroke to Path]

Poly - you mentioned v1.4 - the behavior is quite different in 1.3, 1.3.1 and 1.3.2.  Must be fixed in 1.4 ??? If so - it needs to be documented. The change in how text in converted to paths in 1.3+++ was not documented and resulted in a ton of posts at Reddit and Facebook groups.

However, as a Windows user I cannot use v1.4beta 1 or 2, GTK file open/save dialog is dead on arrival for me. I prefer the native. The GTK open/save will not open folder links. Nor will it allow basic Window's 11 file management tasks such as renaming or deleting. It only displays generic file icons. Nor will it preview raster files (JPG, PNG). So - I was told this will be fixed in 1.4.1 (December maybe ???)
