Beginners' Questions rectangle tool draws something else, how to reset?

    Hi. New user here. I am learning how to draw basic shapes. I draw some rectangles, etc. I did not notice any problems. Then I saved my first file, and started a new file. Now the rectangle tool no longer draws a rectangle. It draws something like an ellipse or oval. I think this is something about saving some things from what you just worked on. But when I click on the rectangle tool, I need it to draw a rectangle every time.

    How do I fix this? I have tried edit/preferences/system/reset preferences and also clear history.

    I also did a search on the forum to see if I could find a similar question, but I did not find anything relevant.

    Please help.

    You probably moved the handles that control rounded corners by accident. Use the node tool and select the rectangle, then you can move those handles and make as sharp or as rounded corners as you like. :)

    👍

    There is a button at the end of the rectangle tool controls to reset the rounding and make the corners sharp.

    Thanks for the replies. By the way I am using version 1.1. The link above takes me to a manual page that says "This section not yet updated for Inkscape v0.92." No worries though. I am already getting a bit used to the GUI for 1.1. In general it's a nice GUI.

    Here are some details about the issue. I start a new document. Then I click on the rectangle tool. I draw a rectangle. It has rounded corners. I see that in the settings panel that has the label "Change" that the numbers for Rx and Ry are greater than zero. This is what surpised me because I started a new document. But I see that I can set Rx and Ry to zero.  Now the first rectangle is not rounded. Then if I click on the rectangle tool again and draw a second rectangle, it is not rounded.

    Next I click on the circle tool and draw two shapes. I get a circle or ellipse as expected. No problem.

    Then I click on the rectangle tool and draw another rectangle. This time there are no rounded corners. But if I make rounded corners on the rectangle, and then click on the rectangle tool, and draw a new rectangle, it also has rounded corners.I see that this is the way it's supposed to work. To get a plain rectangle, no rounded corners, I can set Rx and Ry to zero. I can see how this behavior is useful.

    I guess what surprised me as a beginner is that the setting that the rectangle is rounded carries over to a new document. I did not expect that. But now that I understand it, it's not a problem.

    I tried changing some preferences so the settings from the old document rectangle settings would not carry over to a new document. But now I see it's not really a big issue for me. Probably it's a good feature which I do not appreciate yet. Overall I am happy so far. 😀

    I suggest that you switch to version 1.2 before you get too used to 1.1. Might as well learn the latest and greatest if you are new to the program! :)

    I had a similar issue and came across this when searching for an answer so I will share one possibility. I would draw a rectangle but when I zoomed in on the corner it was slightly and dragging the handle would only make the radius bigger but would never remove it completely. It turned out that I was actually drawing a rectangle with the same color(black) Fill and Stroke so the stroke creates a slight rounded corner effect as it passes around the corner but the rectangle itself is not actually rounded.

    @mkrnblk Good catch!

    I will also add that this will happen when the stroke style "join"  is set to for round, rather than miter or bevel.
