Beginners' Questions Problem with 1.3 on my Mac.

I am on step 3 of making intersecting word art. I have made the Last name in all Caps. Then I made the first name in Cursive (Santa Fe- Let).

I go to Path - Object to Path. Now I am suppose to have changed it from a series of letters to individual objects.

The name is outlined with the arrows surrounding the name. Then I go to Object-Ungroup (Shift-Control G). That is suppose to break apart each of those letters into its each individual object>

I should have 5 objects selected of type Path. It does not separate the letters as it did in 1.3 version. It does not do anything, whether I have it in the rectangle or not.

    What am I doing wrong?

The status bar will describe the nature of the selected object.

The converted text may already be a single path. This is new behavior in 1.3.2 for the Object to Path operation on text: https://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/Release_notes/1.3#Object_to_Path

Select your text then [Path > Object to Path] to create a single path object, followed by [Path > Split Path] to separate the letters into individual paths.

I meant the problem existed in the 3.1 version, not the 1.3 version

I now have a problem with the next step in 3.1. Below are the steps I followed in 1.3 but in 3.1 when I get to step 9 and go to Path>Dynamic Offset, the Little Diamond does not appear so I cannot make the original to fatten the letters.
