Beginners' Questions "Phantom" object lines on PDF import

I'm a fairly novice user- and have made some of my own SVG files in Inkscape. I primarily use them for laser cutting and etching leather. I've had luck importing patterns in from adobe .pdf files but I've noticed with some recent files there are phantom lines or object boundaries that show up. The are the green lines in the screen snip. I'm not sure what these are, or where they come from?Β  I noticed them after pasting in the objects then selecting edit points. I'm in the process of joining the individual pattern line segments. My assumption is that when the pattern was made in Adobe Illustrator the did it in segments and my laser works better from a single path. Regardless- can some one help me understand what those green lines are? Even though they are normally not visible and my laser seems to ignore them, I don't want to risk ruining a piece by the program picking them up and deciding to etch or cut rectangles across my leather.

Try: go Object->Clip->Release Clip to get rid of these clipping paths.

Release Clip caused a weird blackout of all the objects within the rectangles, so hit Undo and tried "Set Inverse Clip". That made them go away- I'll have to read up on what a Clip is to understand what I just did- but thanks!

<Edit>Β  Set Inverse Clip caused me to lose part of the pattern, there are a number of stitch holes for the piece. From what little I've just now read about "Clip and Mask" it would appear that these are possibly leftovers from how the object was initially created. (?) Please correct me if I'm mistaken. From dinking around, it would appear that they may have used a rather complicated method to design the shapes, and add the stitch holes. This was originally a PDF intended to be printed as a black and white document and laid over the raw leather as a pattern for hand/manual tracing and cutting.Β  The attached images show the current SVG and then what I'm seeing with all objects selected in "Node Tool"

The black rectangle is actually the clipping shape which can be deleted after "release clip". Check the content at Layers and Objects panel.

OMG: just saw the screenshot. Every segment got its own clipping path.

@polygon - Yes it would appear so. I have no idea how or why this is. Here's process from start to now: 1) right clicked PDF, Open With- selected Inkscape. Inkscape opened up a dialog where I select the PDF pages to bring into Inkscape. I sect the rendering options (medium) then it opens in an Inkscape window.Β  I then select/edit pattern pieces ( i.e., objects) and copy and paste them into a new Inkscape file so I can arrange and prepare them to run through my Glowforge laser cutter. I was in the process of joining the segment nodes into a single object/path when I noticed the green lines showing up.Β

When I look at the layers- all of the black rectangles (Clipping or Masking?) seem to have the format of "path1234-1", "path 4567-2". I'm going through and deleting them- I'll update the results. Hopefully I don't lose parts of the pattern...

I usually select a single black clip object, then use Edit>Select>Select Same>fill color, then delete. (This may remove other objects with black fill).

Ughh- @TylerDurden I wish I had seen this before. I just gave myself carpal tunnel clicking and deleting all the dashed #'s from the layer list. Which appears to have been successful - there's nothing extra showing in nodes.
