Beginners' Questions Node tool gone haywire!

    I created an svg image by taking a png and tracing it.

    I began to refine my image by using the node tool: I selected nodes and added/removed them, changed their type and manipulated their handles.

    Suddenly the node tool has stopped working predictably:

    Node handles for some nodes won't show, and I cannot add new nodes.

    What could be happening here?
