I presume you are dealing with an SVG file? If so, select the Text tool, click your text and edit it to what you need. If you look up to the menu bar at the top of the screen, you can change fonts, sizes, spacing etc. there. Colour can be changed via the Fill & Stroke panel at the right hand side.
If it's not an SVG file (for example, a .jpg or .png) then Inkscape - as a vector graphics application- probably isn't the best tool for the job (it may be possible to do something with Inkscape, but without seeing the image it's impossible to say.) Gimp is generally a better choice for jpgs/pngs.
Thank you for your response z3z. In fact, I am not dealing with an SVG file. I tried converting the file from JPG to SVG but the graphic was changed in such a way as to render it unusable. I'll try Gimp.
How does one change already existing text in an image to different text while retaining the same background please?
