Beginners' Questions Importing image loses its sharpness in inkscape

I am importing plot/graph from Origin lab. I do Ctrl + C and paste it in inkscape standard A4 size page file using Ctrl + V. However, the image is losing its sharpness. When I export this svg file as png image even with 300 dpi resolution, it looks blurry. The problem exists when I am pasting the plot from Origin lab into inkscape. When I paste it from Origin lab to Word or ppt directly, it looks clear. I am not able to figure out how can I correct it. Can someone help? Please check the figure attached. The above plot is from inkscape while the below plot is obtained by directly pasting into word. Thank you.

FYI, I use inkscape to edit two or more plots and make it into one figure.

Please describe your OS & version, the version of Inkscape and the installer you used.

Paste in Inkscape remembers and use the settings from last time you used Import. You can change these settings in Object > Object Properties..., Image Rendering.

@TylerDurden My OS is Windows 10 Pro and version of inkscape is 0.92.1 r15371. I installed from internet using .exe file.

@Aero I did not get your comment. I pasted it and after that, I went to Object properties. However, I could not find anything active there.

Please share a screenshot of your Preferences>Bitmaps.

An object must be selected for settings in Object Properties to become active.

For a newly installed Inkscape 0.92.1, default setting in Preferences is Blocky (optimize speed). The first time Import is used with its default settings (Auto), the setting in Preferences will automatically change to None (auto).

@Aero Yes I got what you are saying. I generally keep Image DPI as Default import resolution and Image rendering mode as none (auto). However, I am directly using copy-paste from Origin Lab. I tried using import and it also does not work with different settings.

Auto is blurry, optimizeSpeed is sharp.

The screenshot seems to indicate the resolution is being overridden to 96. Maybe try un-ticking the checkbox or importing at higher resolution.

@Aero I tried switching to OptimizeSpeed option. Yes, it does make the image sharp. However, I do not want to save every image and then import it because I have too many images and I cant afford to spend that much time. So I need to use copy (from Origin plots) and paste (in Inkscape) command only.

@TylerDurden I did what you said and also tried different options by ticking/un ticking. However, none of them is working so far.

    Thank you

If you can share an Origin file and precisely describe the workflow, I can try to replicate using the trial version of Origin.

Okay thank you for the efforts you are putting. @TylerDurden

I am attaching a origin file. The origin version I am using is Origin 9.0.0 (64 bit). In the file, you will see two plots made. Here is the sequence I follow which you can replicate.

    1. Click on one of the graph windows and press Ctrl+C, 2. Go to Inkscape and press Ctrl+V. First plot is pasted. Move the plot on top left of the page using Shift and arrow key. Delete the legend if that also gets pasted, 3. Repeat this operation for the second plot, 4. Now adjust the two plots on the inkscape side by side. The size of the plots is kept in such a way that they can fit on A4 sheet without shrinking. Legend which is common to both the plots can be placed down in between the 2 plots, 5. Save inkscape file. Press Ctrl+Shift+E to export PNG image. Set DPI to 300. Use export drawing option to export only the drawing rather than the whole page, 6. The output PNG can now be pasted in Word document, 7. To compare the quality of output PNG in Word, press Ctrl+C in one of the plots in Origin and then press Ctrl+Alt+V, selected enhanced metafile and then paste. If the quality of both these images match, then our job is done. A question might arise that if I am pasting the plot from Origin file, why not save the Inkscape file as enhanced metafile and then paste it in Word. I have done this also but only in vain.

Please note as you explore Origin, you may go to Tools>Options>Page and see that I have kept Advanced and Keep size option active and not set resolution active. I have tried using set resolution option by keeping it to 300 dpi but when I paste it in Inkscape, the image is very big and it needs to be reduced. Even after reducing size, the quality does not change. Hence I used Keep size option active which reduces my work slightly.

That´s pretty sure due color management or different color profile. Inkscape has no really color management implemented. You can try to assign the same color profile via Document Properties->Color: Linked Color Profiles: etc.

@polygon I have you suggestion & no fruitful result yet tried, also normally png s are supposed to appear as they are with no color issues

No idea what else to try. Krita supports also 16bit color depth. Can you make a screenshot with both apps open side-by-side for comparison?

Regarding the original issue by @venkateshmd  (is there some forum policy about hijacking old threads with unrelated topics?):

If you copy & paste from Origin to Inkscape you'll likely end up with a bitmap copy (i.e. raster and therefore "blurry").

If you copy & paste from Origin to Microsoft programs Origin will typically try to use WMF/EMF export (i.e. vector and therefore sharp).

Solution is to export to a vector format from origin (EMF/WMF/PDF, whatever works best) and then import that into Inkscape.
