As far as I understand, the external drive would have to be connected to the computer, before you could access it. Then you should be able to find it using File menu > Open.
Or if you have Inkscape set up as your default application for SVG files, you could double-click on SVG file in the external drive, and Inkscape would open them.
In respect of my external 2T drive, which is continually connected to my Mac, and yet does not show iin Inkscape, In which I have also tried to get my Linux Inkscape to see it. Has anybody solved this problem?
I guess I don't know for a fact that you can see an external drive in Inkscape. But as far as I know, you should be able to. And I can only show you what I see in windows. This is a screenshot of the Open dialog, showing where the external drive would be, if I had one connected. (click on to make it bigger)
If this is a bug, it's one I've never heard about. Maybe someone else has heard of it?
Well, not solved so far, but still trying things out. I have set up the SVG file selection, but I have not had the chance to test it yet, because of a burst problem in our home.
Just finished going through every icon, symbol, heading etc on my Inkscape on the Mac............ not a sign of external drive! However, Inkscape external drive on my Sparky Linux is bang on. My view therefor is that the Mac problem is a "HAND OF MAC" problem. Time to put the Mac to bed!
There was an issue with documents on a Mac not being accessible with the 1.0 beta, which is now solved on the development version. Might be that that was the same. However, I don't want to discourage you from leaving the Mac alone and coming to the bright side :)
Yes, I do know of various problems with Mac and bugs. My only disscouragement for leaving Mac, is that my linux is 32 bit, but hey, it works very good for such an old machine, and looks great.
My real urge to leave mac, is being forced into the world of super survalence and the sale and money making of my data by others.
Many thanks for your help. Not a happy person in the world of mess.
Yup, you may well have it right. I cannot think of a better community, than Linux. I am going to work with my 32 bit for as long as I can. Additionaly I am looking at converting my 64 bit Mac to Linux. I just need to study this for a while so that I do not end up with a wrecked Mac.
Yes, Could do better, could be aimed at us at times, especially me.
I have bought a number of books on Linux, but thet terminal still aludes me. However, Inkscape does impress me and reminds me of my days in the workplace, all those years ago.
Still, I am aiming at building the 32 bit up to keep it in working order and see Inkscape as a good foundation. The things I use on Mac are my first target for getting rid of Googleish matters, getting My local radion progs going in 32 bit, including secure emails and my iTunes lib.
Seems like you're really invested into this endeavor, buying and reading books, even :)
Usually, users don't need to use the terminal at all on modern Linux distros, unless they want to, or want to do something that goes beyond the standard. I only need it for some programming-related tasks and for stuff that I find works quicker there, rather than finding my way through graphical interfaces. So you shouldn't be too afraid of it.
I don't know how hard or easy it will be to install a Linux system on an older Mac computer, I hope it will work out :) For secure emails, maybe this could be of interest to you: https://emailselfdefense.fsf.org/en/index.html (guide for setting up GPG email encryption on various operating systems)
Wow Maren, well done, I spend much time trying to find new ways to avoid Googlesim, most of the time without sucess. That is most helpful. Thank you again,
Well, I have not been able to see the external drive that has my cad files, so I am getting help to put a USB storage system on my 64 bit Mac to try another route. Any ideas would be gratefully received.
The plan is to put a linux OS in the drive and have the Inkscape in the OS.
If you have tried this out with the beta2 on a Mac (you didn't mention if you had updated), and it still doesn't work with that latest version, then please report a bug at https://inkscape.org/report .
Not able to see anything but PDF files and SVG. The pdf files do not seem complete (lines misssing). So the bottom line is, the only complete image for seeing from my library is Screen Capture.
However, the screen capture does not allow me to work on the image.
Appologise, I should have mentioned that the bigger screen capture was from the Inkscape workspace. This one is from my Mac Desktop showing the content of the image,
No, I moved one or two of the files from my external Mac drive filing system, and still could not open or see them them in Inkscape. However, as you can see from the screen capture of the .pdf something is working, but with elements missing.
As you may know, cad files contain modeling files, back up files and plotting files, only the .pdf (non modeling files) can be seen, but I have to drag them onto my Mac Desktop as Inkscape does not see them in its system. Yes, it is quite confusing.
If this is becoming rather impossible, then please tell me and I will walk away from this.
Additionally, I did notice that the Tracing option in the beta version seemed to be missing?
Okay, great - thank you for the replies. To make it possible that this can be fixed for the release version of Inkscape 1.0, please report it as a bug at https://inkscape.org/report , with all the relevant details (it's not relevant that lines are missing in an opened pdf, however it is relevant that you can open and save SVG files to your disk - in contrast to the external drive. It would be relevant to know if other applications can access that drive for saving to/reading from).
All that report needs be about is being unable to access the drive.
Other bugs are unrelated, and should go into their own issue. The developer who will work on those will likely be a different person than the one who is able to fix macOS drive access problems.
Please include screenshots of dialogs where applicable.
Firstly, many thanks for your assistance in this matter, it is very comforting. Now, I have been on the "report bug site", a bit small for including what I have ready for them!
You may realise, that I have been having 'intruder problems' and I have got a bit out of sinc with the avoidance password matter and have tried to change them to enable me to get on their bug site, but without sucess. Additionally, I have never had course to use the "report bug site", so I appologise if I do not get it right.
I am also trying to get my 64 bit Mac and a large usb drive conected as a Linux location, which for me, requires a fair bit of study. Have you ever done this?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. But that message form with the simplified "fill in the blanks" is meant to help people who have never made a bug report before. You are perfectly welcome to elaborate with details.
My previous cad files are on an external drive. They comprise .DWG .DXF and Gimp files.
Additionally, I have registered for your Forum, but not recognised?

Hi Maren,
I am well on my way to the Bright side. The glossy ligts and adds have never atracted me, but the Linux way has.
Kind regards,
Cyjos
Same for me. What can be better than 🐧_🐧_🐧_🐧 and the community surrounding them? ;-)
I hope you'll be able to upgrade to a 64bit computer, though, as some distros are going to drop 32bit soon.
(sorry for the edit mails - it doesn't let me use multiple penguins!!!)
(I'm giving up, the forum has a bug with penguins...)

I can't follow. Your original problem was that you were not able to access an external drive.
Can you access the external drive with Inkscape 1.0beta2 ?
Hi,
No, I moved one or two of the files from my external Mac drive filing system, and still could not open or see them them in Inkscape. However, as you can see from the screen capture of the .pdf something is working, but with elements missing.

Sorry, I don't think that answers my question.
So, trying to do this step by step, please answer with yes or no:
1. Have you installed Inkscape 1.0beta2? If not, please do that now, and only then continue with the next questions.
2. With that beta2, have you been able to select the external drive in the File > Open dialog?
3. With that beta2, have you been able to see files on the external drive in the File > Open dialog?
4. With that beta2, are you able to save and open SVG files onto / from the external drive?
1) So sorry. Yes, installed 1.Obeta2 (in order to answer the questions that I have answered).
2) No, my external drive cannot be seen in Inkscape "select file to import"
3) No, no files seen.
4) No, not able to see the external drivw
As described before, I can pick up my pdf files from the Mac desktop, in particular from the Inkscape "select file to import"
Okay, great - thank you for the replies.
