Beginners' Questions How do I create a text box that ... works ?

For the life of me I cannot get text in a Text Object to display correctly in the box I draw.   When I type on the first line past the right hand margin of the box, the text goes back to be beginning of the line and types over the original text.  Newlines/Returns don't work.

Very strange!   Even stranger I have a distant memory of being able to do very advanced text manipulation in Inkscape.

    thanks

With the text tool selected, on the top toolbar, take a look at the 'spacing between baselines' box. This should be set to probably 1.0 lines minimum.

Is this a new text box that you're creating from scratch, or is it something you've imported from, for example, a PDF? I've had issues with text from PDFs before, and clicking on the Text menu / Remove manual kerns has helped. On that same menu, I suppose you could try 'Unflow text' to reset anything that's been applied in the past.

If nothing here helps, perhaps you could share a sample SVG that shows the problem.

I am working with a fresh install of version 1.0.2 (1.0.2+r75+1) (Ubuntu)

Trying to create a box from scratch.  Cannot find a  'spacing between baselines' box anywhere.  What menu heading is this under?

It's on the toolbar. I've attached a screenshot.

Aha!  I didn't have a toolbar which of course is found under:

    View
        Show/Hide

    Many thanks for your help!
