I am new to Inkscape (I'm using v1.1 on windows) and general vector editing. I have searched for solutions, but because I am not sure what to call the issue I am experiencing I did not have any luck finding an answer.
I am attempting to change the color of an object from black to white. When I select the object and choose a color only the center changes to the color I want. There is a thick border that does not change color, and it says something about not being bounded... I don't know how to fix that.
Also, the nodes and the connecting lines between the nodes are not on the edge of the object, but are recessed from the edge. I don't have a clue as to why that is happening or if it is related to the above issue.
I have attached a screenshot showing what I am trying to describe. How can I deal with the above two issues, or can someone point me in the proper direction?
Why "Fill"-tool at all? When it´s a closed shape simply select another fill color and delete the stroke when you don´t need one. Nothing suspicious in the screenshot for me.
I apologize. I didn't word that very well and I'm learning as I go. When I select the object, then I click a color from the color palette at the bottom. The screenshot is the result. No matter what color I click it changes to that color, but the border always remains black and unchanged. I don't know why it is doing that or how to fix it.
The solution was very easy and I feel dumb, but without your assistance it would have taken me much longer to figure it out. Your GIF is what prompted me to go check on something I hadn't checked before.
I had "Fill" set as "unset" however, I also needed to set "Stroke" as "unset" as well. Once I changed that setting everything worked as expected.
Thank you for helping this stupid newbie, it is much appreciated.
I didn´t change anything in your file - just clicked the swatches to assign Fill colors and with shift key down for Stroke colors. Glad you got it sorted out.

Can you upload and example file probably?
I have attached the same SVG file I used for the screenshot above.
Fill+stroke works as expected - can´t find any issue:
