I have messed up the fill and stroke dialogue big time. Some time back I did something that made it free floating, outside the dialog docking bar on the right. Now, trying to get it back into the dock, I found and clicked "iconify this (something)". At that point, a small fill and stroke color selector area appeared at the top right corner of the window, in the menu bar area. No stroke controls, gradient, or other options were there. Now that has disappeared and I can find no way to change fill and stroke.
Hi ImaGeek, If you hit Ctrl+Shift+F, the dialogue should appear somewhere. You can change the icons to a bigger interface through the preferences (Ctrl+Shift+P) >ย Interface > Dockbar style / Switcher style. There I always use the icons and text. That makes everything bigger and easier to see.
Sometimes the dialogue is a small area on the right top side of the screen. If that is the case, you click on that to make it bigger. Sometimes it is hidden behind the main screen, if it is not docked but a floating window. Try to make the main window smaller and drag it aside to see if the dialogue is hidden behind it. It can also be on an extra monitor, if you work with 2 monitors.
If you cannot find a way to make it reappear, visit Edit > Preferences > System and make note of the path to you user configuration file (preferences.xml).
Then close Inkscape, delete or rename that file, restart Inkscape. This will reset all your preferences, but it will also reset dialog positions.
Every now and then my dock gets closed while there is still something "iconified" in it.ย If you position your mouse in the snap control bar, and slowly move it to the left, you will see at some point the mouse pointer changes to a 2-sided arrow.ย When you see the 2-sided arrow, press the mouse button and drag to the left.ย That will open the docking area.
I'm thinking you will see the dialog is still iconified, and you'll be able to click on it, to open it.
Just clicking Object menu > Fill and Stroke, should open the dock, if it's iconified there.ย But if it doesn't, try to find that 2-sided arrow to open the dock.

What can I do?

Thanks for all the helpful tips. Seems like no matter how long I use Inkscape, something new always creeps in to keep me on my toes. ๐
