Every time I want to export my picture to e.g. PNG I have to give Inkscape the full path to the place where the file should be stored. Inkscape doesn't remember the last given path. This is quite frustrating as I do it over and over again.

Is there a way to make Inkscape understand?

If I export a PNG with no objects selected, the path defaults to the document's location.

If I export a PNG with "Page" selected in the export dialog (no objects selected), Inkscape saves the path in the document.

The same applies for any selected objects exported individually, the path is saved per object.

Can you check Preferences->Input/Output->SVG-Output->Path data->Path string format: Optimized.  Which works for me.

Thanks, but this is already checked. I have "Optimized". It still doesn't work.

I seem to get different default paths depending on whether I have "Page", "Selection", etc. but it never updates it after I change it.

It should update and save the path after clicking the Export button.

Thanks a lot Tyler for looking into this so carefully. I don't know why it doesn't update. I start from an old file that has a certain Export path and filename set. I edit the figure. Then I change path+filename and export. After closing the file and opening it again, I am back at the first path and filename. I tried to look at it in the XML editor as you do, but I cannot find any entries starting with "inkscape:export-..." that you see.

Do you you use explicit "Export" dialog or "Save as" probably?

Ah, now I know what was missing. I didn't _save_ the file after I exported it. It is not until you _save_ it that the export path is updated permanently.

I find that a bit unintuitive. For me, exporting is the final step in the process and I expected the path be automatically updated for the next time I export. Wouldn't it make more sense to have a global export path, and not one tied to individual files? Maybe a setting...

Well, I find this very convenient: the file is in the repository folder and all exports go to be collected in the assets folders.

In my 0.91 version I have to tick 'Close when complete' in the final 'Export' window for inkscape to ensure it lists the same path in the next save

    I had same

The default location of the export folder is the location of the svg file you are working on. It is fixed, and every new object has the same location as the svg file. If you need to export the objects to a new folder, you should input the new location manually each time.

Unfortunately, there is no exception. Inkscape (1.1.2) doesn't offer any options to change it. Perhaps the developers and users are thinking in different ways. I hope developers add a new option that never changes the custom location of export files.
