Learned that "pilus" is Latin for "hair". Make narrow triangles (isosceles) ... like slivers. Using the Node tool they can be bent (curved) as you wish. Then you can duplicate them "x" number of times. Then place them around your main elliptical object. All these steps can be done quickly. Basic Inkscape steps.
You can also try the Scatter Extension in Inkscape for placement around your core elliptical object. (Extensions > Generate from Path > Scatter).

Thanks, Ken. I made 5 different forms and used the Scatter Extension. It worked almost as i expected.
