Beginners' Questions Deselcting last-used tool

    Hi,

I've tried searching everywhere for an answer to this, but can't find anything.

Is there a way to deselect the last-used tool without hitting the keyboard escape key twice or clicking the Select icon?

To me, the natural meaning of hitting the escape key after using the "Text tool" should be "I don't want to use the text tool anymore."

Especially since clicking somewhere else then hitting "E" as an example if the text tool isn't selected will bring up the Ellipse tool. However, since Inkscape holds the last tool, typing an "E" creates a new Text item with an "E" in it.

Is there a setting I have missed somewhere to make Inkscape just release the last tool after finishing use of the tool (whether it be the Text, Elipse, Bezier, whatever) with one press of the Escape key or one click on the canvas? One deselect, just seems to deselect the existing selection, then a second one is needed to release to just the select tool.

Another example of here it's annoying, is using the text key, clicking somewhere on the canvas, then trying to use the space and mouse to move the canvas around, and it just creates a Text item with a string of spaces.

I realise it's only really a workflow issue, but to me it just seems a natural thing to not just use the same tool again - especially since Inkscape has lots of keyboard functionality built into it.

Sorry if this isn't really the place for this, but I couldn't really find anywhere else to ask the question.

The Text tool is a special case... other tools you can simply press the S key for the select tool.

The Select tool is the default pointer... there is no non-active pointer/cursor like some other programs.

There is generally a hierarchy to the escape sequences.

    • - Select tool
    • --- Current tool
    • ---- Edit currently selected object with current tool
    • ----- Edit constituents of the currently selected object.

In the case of a simple tool, the first escape deselects the current object, the second escape drops the current tool and grabs the Select tool.

In the case of the Node Tools, the first escape deselects any selected  nodes, the second escape deselects the object, the third escape drops the current tool and grabs the select tool. The node tool allows using the S key to get back to the Select tool.

    Thanks Tyler.

The "non-active" explanation clears it up. It's about the only negative I've found in Inkscape so far. I guess it's a pain, because the training lessons I am using emphasises using the keyboard shortcuts so heavily. The space mouse to reposition the canvas not working after the Text tool sucks a bit.

The logic is almost like I'm unselecting the Text tool, now I'm really unselecting the Text tool, so I can choose the next tool.

SIt' a shame there's no Preference setting for something like this.
