Beginners' Questions About outline mode in inkscape

Hi, I have a question. In Illustrator, when I had to redraw an image with the pen tool, I would put the JPG image on a layer below and on a layer above, I would start drawing. To better capture the details, I would put that layer in outline mode. How can I do this in Inkscape? I saw that you can view it in outline mode by going to View, but it outlines everything, including the image (you only see a rectangle).
    Thanks.

Inkscape can't apply display modes to individual layers. It's all or nothing. [View > Display Mode > Outline Overlay] is a partial solution. It's like outline mode but with everything rendered at 50% opacity.

You can change a layers opacity in the Objects&Layers dialog. Object>Objects and Layers. Select the layer in the dialog and the "shaded" square icon on the extreme right.
