Does anybody know what the purpose of the "Online" section in the navigation area is?

It seems to only ever show myself (and I kinda know when I'm online). Also it would get quickly crowded down there if the list actually included other users.

IDK, but that's kinda funny, I haven't even seen that page!  I suspect it's another one of the things that our fearless leader needs to invoke down the line.  BTW, I like your avi.

It's in the lower left of the landing page (https://inkscape.org/forums/)

If you're from Germany you usually now the little blue elephant from a very early age: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Sendung_mit_der_Maus
It somehow sticked with me. 😉

oh, I see it, never dawned on me that it should be showing everyone who's on, as I rarely pay attention to that.

Interesting about the elephant.  Never knew kids under 6 couldn't watch tv, very interesting - and my (now deceased) MIL was from Germany.  But she left before that was in effect.

It's broken. Martin has already tried to fix it, but hasn't succeeded yet.

I'm inclined to hold off on fixing it until there's an option not to appear in it. But if anyone has any good ideas, this thread can host them.

I'm not sure there's a need for it, personally. Especially if people will be able to opt-out, seeing who's online doesn't really achieve much. A simple count of people online might be okay (so you can see how many people are ignoring your new post 😉 ), but even that is fraught with difficulties (what actually counts as 'online'? Do they have to have actively clicked on something in the past N minutes? And what to set N to?).

It probably isn't necessary for everyone to be able to see who is online at any given time (or time span).  Perhaps there might be a need for moderators to see, once in a while.  But probably not everyone.

Even for moderators, the avatar/picture isn't necessary - just the name.  I would think showing everyone's av would take a ton of space.

@doctormo I'd be pragmatic about this: It's not really required and currently broken, so rather strip it out completely instead of putting effort into it and potentially opening hte can of worms of privacy concerns.

If people feel an indicator of activity is needed just display a combined number: "12 users online" (but as Xav already explained quite well this number doesn't really help me as a user after all).

More users just showed up for me!

At first, they showed scattered around in the area.  But a couple of reloads later, and they're in a grid.

    Looks nice!

    Edit

OIC!  They look scattered because users without a custom avatar just have a blank square.  It looks like they are ordered in some way which changes over time....possibly visitation time?

Yes it's visitation time. The lack of avatar is a bug for sure, it should show a default image.

Now it shows the pilot guy.  Blank spaces are gone.

I see avis too.  Wonder what happens if say 100 people are on at the same time...

It's capped. Only the most recent people as there's no such thing as "online", just "recently made a request to the server"
