Embroidery and InkStitch how to have a no-stitch, knockout layer?

I've got white fabric and want to use that to show through in one spot of the background. I've placed a circle between the black layer and  green background layer, but if I choose 'none' for the Fill on that object, the background shows through. If I choose white for this layer Fill, then that looks fine in Inkscape, but InkStitch wants to apply white fill  thread there. How do I specify this as a cutout of the background, but the foreground still is stitched? See attached pics. I want the ball to be white without white thread. How can  I do that?

You can use the following steps:

    1. In Inkscape, create a circle the same size as the area you want to cut out of the background.
    2. Set the fill color of the circle to none.
    3. Set the stroke color of the circle to the color of the background fabric.
    4. Select the circle and the background layer.
    5. Click on the "Path" menu and select "Difference".
    6. This will create a hole in the background layer the size of the circle.
    7. Save your Inkscape file.
    8. Open your Inkscape file in InkStitch.
    9. Select the circle layer and click on the "Delete" button.
    10. This will remove the circle layer from the design, but the hole in the background layer will remain.
    11. Save your InkStitch file.
    12. Stitch your design.

When you stitch your design, the white fabric will show through the hole in the background layer, but there will be no white thread.

Draw both circles. Select them both and hit Ctrl+K to combine them (Path > Combine).

What will be the size of the patch?

These are awesome suggestions! MUCH APPRECIATED! I'm about to try these now.

Patch will be 4x4 inches. Is that too small for this level of detail on the soccer ball?

    Appreciatively,

Thank you all. I've had success getting the ball cut out of the green background. Oh, my does that green background use up some thread! How can I get the black foreground image to cut out the green background so it doesn't satin stitch the whole green circle? Selecting both layers and pressing ctrl-K did not do anything (I'm on a Macintosh, btw). Also tried selecting both > path > difference to no avail.

See attached Inkscape vector file. Any additional help you can provide is much appreciated!

Path > Combine or Path > Difference should work. Same as with the white ball. You could also try the shape builder tool which is a nice addition of the latest Inkscape release.

If you want to save a lot of stitches, you could consider to use green fabric for the background as an applique. Just an option.

At the moment everything in your file is a fill. Do you plan to convert parts of the design into other stitch stypes?
Especially the outline (satin) and the ball details (for example running stitches for the seams) could come out nicer if the stitch type was different.
