Not all images are conducive to auto tracing. In some cases, it's better to trace "manually" using Pen/Bezier tool. We would need to see the image in question, to give an opinion.
The one shipped with Inkscape is about tracing pixelart, which is a special technique for low-res bitmaps. It's most liekly not applicable here, which is why I did not suggest it.
You're right that it would help to see an example.
Indeed - Actually I checked when I wrote my intial post and (don't ask me how) determined there wasn't one. I actually thought "This would be a tutorial worth having".
Maybe I was so focused on the word "trace" I did not find the menu entry in the German interace (which uses a different word).
How do I convert png images to vector ?
Some images I want to cut on the vinyl plotter have rough edges
Use "Path -> Trace bitmap..."
I'd recommend to use Google - there are a lot of tutorials dealing with tracing in Inkscape.
Indeed, I think there is one in Inkscape's Help menu > Tutorials. Also the manual: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Trace.html

There is a tutorial for this in the help menu, and it's not the trace pixelart tutorial.

Yep, things like this happen to me all the time... I can definitely understand :)
