Hi! New to both cricut design space and inkscape, but have had experience w other photoshop type tools so can do some things. I'm having alot of difficulties getting my designs to do what I want, especially xfering svg files into design space after I am done with them in inkscape. They just open... differently. Condensed? Missing things? See images below and here is my svg file. Questions I have are:
1. What am I doing wrong specifically w THIS file to make cricut design space distort it so? It doesn't look bad in this case, just different. So in future if like to know what happened.
2. What type of file should I be saving it as to xfer? Just .svg?
3. What is best, to layer the different colors in inkscape so they'll be separated for vinyl before xfer or let design space do it? Should I send the flattened file? Grouped vs ungrounded? Whats the best way for cricut design space to read it easily and organized so it knows to seperate the vinyl?
4. This paticular svg image I want cut in half with words in the middle. I figured out how to do it in inkscape thru object- clip using a square to hid what I want, but when I bring it up in design space it shows the whole pic. What am I doing wrong.
I don't really see the distortion that you are referring to.I suspect that it looks different in Design Space than it does in Inkscape because Design Space puts a black outline where it is going to end up cutting the pieces. So it does make it look different than Inkscape. IMO, you aren't going to want your Cricut to cut the image as you designed it. It is going to leave gaps wherever you see them in your Inkscape image. It looks like you used fill to color in some of the layers in your image. It is extremely difficult to get the fill color to go into the corners of the shapes. (See those gaps?) Here is a better way to get the colors: Start out with your B/W image. Duplicate it for "safety" and then work with the duplicate. Select the image then Path>Breakapart. You will have a solid black silhouette on the top so move it off to the side or delete it. That will leave you with all the different shapes that are in the image. You can now click on each one and change the color to what you want it to be. Delete the original if it is no longer need and save your file as an svg. You do not want to use clip to separate your image. Clipping is really for working with bitmap images - not vectors. To get the separation, you will need to use one of the Boolean path operations like Difference, Exclusion, Division, etc. Your choice will depend on how you want to split the design. Do be aware of the fact that you can only use this operation on two items at a time. (Just like slice in Design Space) So, you may need to use Path> Union to unify same color items, or use the operation on each separate piece in the image. I always duplicate the original, and depending on how you do the split, you may need to use both the original and the duplicate.
