Beyond the Basics Multicore / hyperthreading problem - continual freezes and crashes

    Hello folks.

I am having incredible difficulties keeping Inkscape 1.2.2 from completely locking up and crashing on various files on two separate systems. (both Fedora 38, system details below). I have searched the project issues and this forum but I have not found any information on if others are having difficulty getting multicore / hyperthreading to work at all. I don't believe the files are overly complicated.  But if I do a simple duplicate of a group of items, or a duplication of a layer (and sometimes just simply trying to move a group of items) Inkscape freezes and I get the gnome "force quit or wait" dialog. While this happens I see that a single thread on a single processor core pegs at 100% usage for 10-15 minutes.  I've had the entire gnome environment become unresponsive and the only way I can get it back is to wait until the inkscape process has completed and the cpu usage is not 100% any longer, ssh into the system, pkill inkscape and pkill gnome-session.  I have played with the number of threads, rendering cache size, and the rendering tile multiplier, and the Update strategy (multiscale) but I have been unable to get it to behave in any other way than it currently is.

In an attempt to see if this is an issue with one of my machines and/or the installation method I used to get inkscape installed, I have tried both the flatpak from flathub and the rpm from the Fedora repos on two different systems. Unfortunately, any method results in the same unresponsiveness and total system freezing.

    Systems: Lenovo P1 gen 3 / System76 Gazelle
    OS: both Fedora 38
    MEM: 32GB / 32GB
GPU: Integrated Intel Comelake Gen9 / Gforce GTX 1660TI Mobile 6GB & Intel Comelake Gen9

Both systems are running XORG not Wayland due to the lack of Synergy compatibility with Wayland.

I'd like to see if any other folks are having a similar issue and if so, were they able to get around this?

I am hesitant to open a bug because I am really not sure if it is somehow something only I am experiencing or if it has something to do with my particular setup.

Any information that anyone could provide on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Seems like a lot of issues that include references to Fedora.

It is one of the top and most used distributions so that doesn't surprise me. Unfortunately that fact and the fact that there are a lot of issues from Fedora users doesn't help us solve the issue at hand.

Feel free to explore the reports and file a new one if your issue is not found.

Thanks Tyler! I am going to do some additional testing on my end first to see if I can determine if I have the same issues on different OSes. I'll post any of my additional information here before opening a ticket. Perhaps it will be useful to someone.

It appears I have the same issue across systems, OSes (Fedora 38, Windows 10, Windows 11, RHEL 9) and across multiple hardware platforms. A server, three laptops and a Win 10 VM.

Here is the Inkscape version info and debug info.  I am going to see why the flatpak is complaining about loading modules as well.

Maybe test the latest developer version to see if it's fixed there?

Seems that the development version is pegging one processor and freezing/crashing just like "stable" release.
